Zaplakala i gora i trava
Both the Mountains and the Grass Wept

Serbocroatian English
Zaplakala i gora i trava:
Seja brata Švabama izdala.
Kazala je švapskom kapetanu
Da on ima pušku zakopanu.
Nije puška već mitraljez bio,
Sa njim se je braco ponosio.
Seja s Švabom ide na vjenčanje,
A brata joj vode na strijeljanje.
Kad se seja sa vjenčanja vrati,
Slučajno se na grob bratov svrati.
A iz groba nešto progovara:
»Mila sejo, kasno se kajati,
Tvoj se braco više ne povrati.
Ko ponese moju kabanicu,
Nek pozdravi moju drugaricu.
Ko ponese moje fišeklije,
Nek pozdravi moje seje mile.
Ko ponese moju kapu šajku,
Nek pozdravi i oca i majku.«
Both the mountains and the grass wept:
A sister betrayed her brother to the Germans.
She told a German captain
That he had a buried rifle.
It was no rifle, but a machine-gun,
Her brother set his pride on it.
The sister goes to her wedding with the German,
While they lead her brother to his execution.
When the sister returns from her wedding,
By chance she stumbles on her brother’s grave.
And from the grave he speaks something out:
»My dear sister, it’s too late to regret,
Your brother will never return again.
He who takes up my overcoat,
Let him send greetings to my comrade.
He who takes up my bandolier,
Let him send greetings to my dear sister.
He who takes up my garrison cap,
Let him send greetings to both my father and mother.«
