Chapter 1

Formal equivalence Dynamic equivalence Verse
At [the] head of Gods’ shaping the heavens and the earth — and the earth being vanity and vacuity, and darkness over [the] face of [the] abyss, and [the] breath of Gods moving over [the] face of [the] waters — and Gods says, “Let light be!” and light is. And Gods sees the light, that [it is] good, and Gods separates between the light and between the darkness, and Gods calls to [the] light “day” and to [the] darkness he calls “night”. And evening is, and morning is: day one. | As ’Ĕlōhîm began shaping the heavens and earth, the earth being vanity and vacuity, with darkness over the face of the abyss and ’Ĕlōhîm’s breath moving over the face of the waters, so ’Ĕlōhîm said, “Let light be!”, and light was. And ’Ĕlōhîm saw the light was pleasing. He separated the light from the darkness, and he named light “day” and darkness “night”. So evening passed and morning passed — day one. As ’Ĕlōhîm began to shape the world,
as earth was nothingness and utter waste,
and darkness over the abysses furled,
divine breath stirred upon the water’s face.
The voice of ’Ĕlōhîm said, “Let light be!”
Light was! And beautiful it was to see,
and so, dividing darkness from the light,
he gave a name to each: one day, one night.
The evening passed; the morning fell away,
and so the cycle ended: the first day.
And Gods says, “Let [a] firmament be in [the] midst of the waters, and let it separate between waters and waters.” And Gods makes the firmament, and it separates between the waters which [are] from under [the] firmament and between the waters which [are] from over [the] firmament, and it is so. And Gods calls to the firmament “heavens”, and evening is, and morning is: [the] second day. | Then ’Ĕlōhîm said, “Let a dome be amidst the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” And ’Ĕlōhîm made the dome, and it separated the waters under the dome from the waters over the dome. It was so! Then ’Ĕlōhîm named the dome “heavens”. So evening passed and morning passed — the second day. Then ’Ĕlōhîm said, “Let there be a dome
amidst the waters to divide in two
the wave from wave, the spraying foam from foam.”
A dome he made! Above it waters flew,
dissevered from the seas that churned below.
The dome he named as heaven. It was so!
The evening passed; the morning fell away;
another cycle passed: the second day.
And Gods says, “Let the waters from under the heavens be collected to one place, and let the dry be seen,” and it is so. And Gods calls to [the] dry “earth”, and to [the] confluence of the waters he calls “seas”. And Gods sees that [it is] good. And Gods says “Let the earth sprout sprouts, [the] herbage sowing seed, [the] tree of fruit making fruit of its species, whose seed [is] in itself, on the earth,” and it is so. And the earth sprouts sprouts, [the] herbage sowing seed of its species and [the] tree making fruit, whose seed [is] in itself, of its species, and Gods sees that [it is] good. And evening is, and morning is: [the] third day. | Then ’Ĕlōhîm said, “Let the waters under the heavens flow together to one place, and let what’s dry be seen.” It was so! And ’Ĕlōhîm named what was dry “earth” and named the confluence of water “seas”. And ’Ĕlōhîm saw it was pleasing. He said, “Let the earth sprout sprouts, with the herbage sowing seeds and the fruit trees making fruit for their species, with seeds inside them, on the earth,” and it was so. Then the earth sprouted sprouts, with the herbage sowing seeds for its species and the trees making fruit with seeds inside them for their species. And ’Ĕlōhîm saw it was pleasing. So evening passed and morning passed — the third day. Then ’Ĕlōhîm said, “Let all waters high
beneath the dome which I have fashioned flow
together. Show me places clear and dry!”
And it was so! Where waters could not go,
the dry he named as earth; yet where they met,
as seas he named their interwoven net,
And beautiful it was to see, yet still
he set his words to yet another will:
“Let the earth in blooming verdure sing,
with herbage yielding seed for its rebirth
and fruit trees making fruit in offering,
their seeds within their kind upon the earth.”
And it was so! The earth in verdure sang;
the seeds of herbage from their parents sprang,
and seeds were borne in fruit upon the tree
in kind. O, beautiful it was to see!
The evening passed; the morning fell away;
another cycle ended: the third day.
And Gods says, “Let luminaries be in [the] firmament of the heavens to separate between the day and between the night, and let them be for signs and for appointed times and for days and years, and let luminaries be in [the] firmament of the heavens to [give] light over the earth.” And it is so. And Gods makes two of the luminaries — the great ones — the great luminary for ruling of the day, the small for ruling of the night; and the stars. And Gods gives them in [the] firmament to [give] light over the earth, and to rule in [the] day and in [the] night and to separate between the light and between the darkness. And Gods sees that [it is] good. And evening is, and morning is: [the] fourth day. | Then ’Ĕlōhîm said, “Let luminaries be in the dome of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be used as signs to mark seasons, days, and years, and let them be in the dome of the heavens to light the earth.” It was so! So ’Ĕlōhîm made two great luminaries: the great luminary for ruling the day, and the small one for ruling the night, for which he also made the stars. And ’Ĕlōhîm put them in the dome to light the earth, and to rule in the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness, and ’Ĕlōhîm saw it was pleasing. So evening passed and morning passed — the fourth day. Then ’Ĕlōhîm said, “Let more lights be set
in heaven’s dome to mark the day from night,
to mark the years, that we may not forget,
to cast across the earth their radiant light.”
And it was so! Two lights he fashioned then:
one great to rule the day, one less for when
the night enveloped all; yet for that dark
he crafted also stars. He set these marks
upon his lofty dome to light the land,
to rule in night and day at his command,
and thus again from shadow sundered he
the light — and beautiful it was to see!
The evening passed; the morning fell away;
another cycle ended: the fourth day.
And Gods says, “Let the waters swarm with [the] swarmer of living soul and let [the] flyer fly over the earth over [the] face of [the] firmament of the heavens.” And Gods shapes the monsters — the great ones — and each of the gliding living soul which the waters swarm with, in their species, and each of [the] flyer of wing, in its species, and Gods sees that [it is] good. And Gods blesses them to say, “[Be] ye fruitful, and increase ye, and fill ye the waters in [the] seas, and let the flyer increase in [the] earth.” And evening is, and morning is: [the] fifth day. | Then ’Ĕlōhîm said, “Let the waters swarm with swarmers with living souls, and let the flyer fly over the earth on the face of the dome of the heavens.” And ’Ĕlōhîm shaped the great monsters and each of the gliding living souls which the waters swarm with, in their species, and each winged flyer, in its species, and ’Ĕlōhîm saw it was pleasing. And ’Ĕlōhîm blessed them to say, “Be fruitful, and increase, and fill the waters in the seas, and let the flyer increase in the earth.” So evening passed and morning passed — the fifth day. Then ’Ĕlōhîm said, “Let the waters swarm
with swarming things endowed with living soul;
above the earth let flyers take their form,
on heaven’s face to pitch and wheel and roll.”
He shaped the vast and monstrous beasts of yore
and every gliding soul beneath the sea;
in kind he shaped each flyer’s wings to soar.
Life teemed! And beautiful it was to see,
so ’Ĕlōhîm gave every kind he made
a blessing to spread over his domain:
“Be fruitful, and increase! Be ye arrayed
in hosts to fill the sea, the sky, the plain.”
The evening passed; the morning fell away;
another cycle ended: the fifth day.
And Gods says, “Let the earth bring out [the] living soul in its species, beast and creeper and living thing of [the] earth, in its species,” and it is so. And Gods makes [the] living thing of the earth in its species and the beast in its species and each creeper of the land in its species. And Gods sees that [it is] good. And Gods says, “Let us make human (’Āḏām) in our image, as our likeness, and let them rule over [the] fish of the sea and over [the] flyer of the heavens and over [the] beast and over all of the earth and over each of the creeper, the one creeping over the earth.” And Gods shapes the human in his image. In [the] image of Gods he shapes him. Male and female he shapes them. And Gods blesses them and Gods says to them, “[Be] ye fruitful, and increase ye, and fill ye the earth, and subdue ye it, and rule ye over [the] fish of the sea and over [the] flyer of the heavens and over every living thing, the one creeping over the earth.” And Gods says, “Behold! I give to ye all herbage sowing seed that [is] on [the] face of all of the earth, and each of the tree in which [is the] fruit of [a] tree sowing seed. To you it is [given] for food. And to every living thing of the earth, and to every flyer of the heavens, and to every one creeping over the earth in which [is a] soul of life, [is given] all green herbage for food,” and it is so. And Gods sees all of that he has made, and behold, [it is] very good. And evening is, and morning is: the sixth day. | Then ’Ĕlōhîm said, “Let the earth bring forth living souls, in their species, beasts and creepers and living things of the earth, in their species.” It was so! So ’Ĕlōhîm made the living thing of the earth, in its species, and the beast, in its species, and each creeper of the ground, in its species, and ’Ĕlōhîm saw it was pleasing. And he said, “Let us make humankind (’Āḏām) in our image, as our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea, and over the flyers of the heavens, and over the beasts, and over all the earth, and over every creeper creeping over the earth.” And ’Ĕlōhîm shaped the human in his image: in the image of ’Ĕlōhîm he shaped him. Male and female he shaped them. And ’Ĕlōhîm blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful, and increase, and fill the earth, and subdue it, and rule over the fish of the sea and over the flyer of the heavens and over every living thing that is creeping over the earth.” And ’Ĕlōhîm said, “See! I give you all herbage sowing seeds that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree in which is the fruit of a tree sowing seeds; to you it is given for food. And to every living thing of the earth, and to every flyer of the heavens, and to every one creeping over the earth in which there is a soul of life is given all green herbage for food.” It was so! And ’Ĕlōhîm saw all that he had made, and see! It was very pleasing. So evening passed and morning passed — the sixth day. [translation incomplete]
